BTC is the ticker symbol for Bitcoin, functioning the same way stock tickers like AAPL or currency codes like USD do in traditional markets. It is the shorthand used on every major exchange, wallet interface, and price data platform to identify and denominate Bitcoin. One BTC equals one bitcoin. The symbol is informal in origin but universally adopted across the industry.

In some formal financial and banking contexts, the code XBT is used instead, following the ISO 4217 convention for currencies not tied to a specific country. Both BTC and XBT refer to the same asset. The smallest unit of bitcoin is the satoshi, equal to 0.00000001 BTC. All amounts on the Bitcoin network are ultimately denominated in satoshis at the protocol level, with BTC being the more convenient display unit for everyday use.
