The Genesis Block, also known as Block 0, is the very first block of the Bitcoin blockchain. Satoshi Nakamoto mined it on 3 January 2009, marking the launch of the Bitcoin network. Unlike all subsequent blocks, the Genesis Block is hardcoded directly into the Bitcoin software and does not reference a previous block, because none existed.

Embedded in the Genesis Block's coinbase data is the message: "The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks." This line is taken from a headline in The Times newspaper from that date. It is widely understood as a commentary on the fragility of the traditional financial system and a statement of purpose for a new form of money that operates without banks or central authorities.

A technical curiosity of the Genesis Block is that the 50 BTC block reward it contains cannot be spent. The original Bitcoin code handles the Genesis Block in a way that excludes it from the UTXO set, meaning those coins are permanently locked. Every Bitcoin node that has ever run has verified the same Genesis Block, making it a shared foundation for the entire network.
